Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT)

CLASS 1 MANDATORY ENTRY LEVEL TRAINING (MELT)

Ministry of Transportation in British Columbia has followed the footsteps of neighboring provinces and announced its MELT (Mandatory Entry-Level Training) program for commercial drivers on March 31, 2021. This will result in better trained new drivers and improved road safety in BC.

As of October 18, 2021 – any driver taking a Class 1 Road Test in BC must undergo a rigid training program that exceeds the minimum requirements set by the National Safety Code Standard, composed of a minimum of 140 hours of instruction and training.

MELT program for new drivers of heavy commercial vehicles stipulates a minimum required number of practical behind-the-wheel (in-cab) driving hours, in-yard hours and theoretical instructional hours.It emphasize safe operating practices for mountainous geography and diverse driving conditions to ensure commercial drivers are prepared for B.C.’s highway network and the changing weather patterns encountered in the mountains.ICBC is the regulatory body for driver training schools and instructors in BC and is consulting with the commercial driving industry, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General to finalize the curriculum.
