What you're preparing for
Before you can enrol in a Class 1 MELT course, ICBC has to issue you a Class 1 learner's licence — and before that happens you sit a knowledge test at a driver licensing office. This practice test is built for that exam.
You actually sit two tests that day: the commercial knowledge test and a separate road signs test. Both are multiple choice, both are in English only, and the answers to all of it come from one book — ICBC's Driving Commercial Vehicles guide.
Air brakes are on this test
This is the part that catches people out. In British Columbia the air brake material is folded into the Class 1 knowledge test — ICBC's own study chart says a Class 1 applicant is not required to take the separate single-unit air brake knowledge test, because it's already covered here. You need to know air brakes cold before your first day of training, not after it. Roughly a quarter of the questions below are air brake questions for exactly that reason.

This runs in the real format ICBC publishes for the Class 1 knowledge test: 60 questions, 48 to pass, 75 minutes — 80%, the pass mark on every ICBC knowledge test. There is no skip button here, because the Class 1 and air brake combined test doesn't have one either.

Sitting the Class 3 test? Yours is 35 questions with 28 to pass, and the air brake material is not folded into it — you take the air brake knowledge test separately for the Code 15 endorsement. This practice test is set to the longer Class 1 format, so treat the extra length as a bonus, and use the air brake practice test for that side of it.

Read the guide, don't skim it
ICBC's Driving Commercial Vehicles is the whole syllabus — every knowledge test answer is in it. Chapters 1 to 11 apply to Class 1; Class 3 skips the bus chapter.

Start the air brake chapters early
Chapters 8, 9 and 10 are the densest part of the book and the most common reason for a failed first attempt. Give them weeks, not an evening.

Take ICBC's practice test too
Ours is not a substitute for theirs. Do both — different question sets mean fewer surprises on the day.

Pressures, air-loss limits, pushrod travel, hours of service. These are the questions where a vague memory scores zero.

Do I need to pass a knowledge test before I start MELT?
Yes. You must hold a Class 1 learner's licence before you can enrol in MELT, and you get the learner's licence by passing the knowledge and road signs tests. Training hours taken before the learner's licence exists do not count and cannot be backdated.
Is there a separate air brake test for Class 1?
Not a separate knowledge test. ICBC combines the air brake questions into the Class 1 knowledge test, so you're not required to sit the single-unit air brake knowledge test on top of it. You do still complete a practical air brake pre-trip inspection as part of your road test.
How many questions are on the real test?
The Class 1 knowledge test is 60 questions with 48 needed to pass, and you get 75 minutes — it is longer than the other commercial tests because the air brake material is built into it. A Class 2, 3 or 4 test is 35 questions with 28 to pass in 45 minutes. The pass mark is 80% on every ICBC knowledge test.
What happens if I fail?
There's a waiting period before you can try again — seven days for a knowledge test. It's not a disaster, but it's a week you didn't need to lose, which is the whole argument for over-preparing.
